If you want to invest in a fishing reel for your angling, there are a number of factors you will need to take into consideration. These include reliability, price, and even your preferred brand. However, the main determining factor will be where you would like to use your fishing reel. In addition, these are some of the things you should look into.

Your level of experience

There are different types of reels that are meant for people of different levels of experience. For instance, spincasting reel is suitable for beginners. On the other hand, a baitcasting reel is only intended for seasoned anglers. However, there are some types that can accommodate a range of experience levels. One example is the spinning reel.

The spooling mechanism

In earlier designs, direct drive mechanism was often used, whereby the handle and spool were coupled directly . Turning the crank wound and unwound the spool. The drawback was that unwinding the spool, for instance when caught fish struggled to pull free, also turned the handle quite fast. That posed great risk to the fingers.

One method that is used to tackle the problem is making use of anti-reverse reel. Such a mechanism makes use of gears that allow spooling while the handle remains in place.

Some models allow the handle to turn in the other direction only when you pull a lever. The model is known as Instant Anti-Reverse ( IAR). Many modern direct drive models use this method.

Although some reels use automatic rewind systems, these have remained largely unpopular with many anglers, who enjoy manual operations. In any case, the system is only effective when you haven’t caught any fish, a situation that no angler enjoys.

Gearing

Although a higher ratio in the gears makes spooling faster, the lower ratio results in greater torque, which comes in handy if you have a bigger catch.

When you want to buy a suitable fishing reel, you should bear these factors in mind, including the material used, once you have determined the type of fishing you are interested in.

Maintaining your fishing gear will help keep it for a longer duration of time. This is true whether you want to prevent having to repair nets, learn how to splice ropes, or incorporate a salt rid procedure.

Any little bit of care that you apply will help increase the life span of not only your fishing gear but your boat. For instance, you can make outboard engines, stern drives, boat hulls and fittings, boat trailers, last longer if you take proper care of them.

Helpful Tips for Maintaining Fishing Gear

One of the most basic and helpful maintenance tips you could apply is basic cleaning. Make sure everything is cleaned and sanitized on your boat, and also you will want to thoroughly clean or rinse all tackle.

In addition, you might want to make sure you clean off your rod and reel as thoroughly as possible after use. Furthermore, when you are finished scaling and gutting your fish you will want to sanitize all equipment used for that purpose.

You need to use this advice no matter what your fishing specialty is-whether you are a fly fisherman or a catch and release sports fishing enthusiast. This is also true whatever reel you use, which today is most often the spinning reel.

Care tips for this very important piece of equipment include as follows:

First gather your supplies. You will need usually need 1 small Phillips head screwdriver, three fresh towels, a handful of cotton swabs, paper towel, lubricant (i.e. WD-40) and/or or a small roll of fat pipe.

Then, you need to find a clean area in which to work. At the kitchen table is a wise choice, but it is recommended that the table is covered with cloth or other protective shield.

The next step is to then grab two clean towels. One of the towels will be used to work with in one hand and the other is for setting the parts onto so that that they are not misplaced.

After you have removed the rod from the reel, you need to remove the coil handle. Once removed, place the handle and the screw onto the second clean towel.

Next grab another clean towel and hot water and use it wipe down the entire reel. Using WD-40 or other lubricant will help you thoroughly clean the outside of the coil before cleaning.

Then you use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws in order to better clean the coil handle. Cotton swabs might also be useful for this purpose, and for when you further clean the insides of this reel unit.

This is only one small part of maintaining fishing gear. You will probably need far more lessons than this. For now though, the information provided is probably most important.

Although most reels are not expensive and can be readily replaced, doing a bit of advance research will save you from making a really bad choice and possibly save one of your first fishing trips from becoming a bit of a disaster. It is vitally important to consider the type of fishing you are going to be doing as well as your own needs and experience level. Some reels which will be great for a skilled operator are not suitable for a beginner, who will find them much too difficult to handle at first.

Fishing Reel Design
The basic design of the fly fishing centerpin reel has barely changed in over a hundred years. The major difference has been the addition of drag mechanisms which make it easier for the fisherman to slow the fish in the water. Loose line is also readily brought by the larger spools used today. Modern versions of the fly fishing reel have been enhanced to allow larger fish to be brought in with the same weight and size of reel. Some enhancements have not endured, for example the attempt to make life easier for the fisherman by automating the reel. Excess weight for the length of line available meant that these reels did not gain popularity, and they are rarely seen today.

Spinning Reels
Fixed spool or spinning reels have also been used for over a century, and have stood the test of time. Originally developed to allow light lures to be cast in salmon and trout fishing, spinning reels have endured because they have eliminated backlash. Although this has brought a different challenge in that the line can become trapped or loose, manufacturers are constantly working to overcome these problems. These spinning reels are built for the comfort of the angler, but they do require a degree of skill to use effectively. This should be taken into account when buying a fishing reel for a beginner.

Spin Cast Reels
The spin cast reel is of far more recent vintage, having only been commercially available since just after the Second World War. Much of the line problems associated with fixed spool reels have been eliminated, with the only price to pay for this a significant reduction in the distance which can be reached when casting the line. These spin cast reels have never managed to replace the spinning reel, as experienced anglers prefer to have the potential to cast longer distances, and are prepared to practice using this type of reel to manually overcome the inherent problems.

The spin cast reel is an excellent choice for a beginner to fishing, and should be the first type of reel looked at if you are thinking of introducing fishing to a young person for the first time. In many cases first impressions will last, and if the young person has a successful and enjoyable first experience of fishing, they are far more likely to stay with the pastime and make it a part of their life. This should be a vital consideration when buying a fishing reel.

Are you into fishing and do you also love collecting classic items? Why not combine both hobbies and collect antique fishing gear. You can combine the thrill of the hunt for vintage gear with learning more about how the sport developed in the last couple centuries.

When you are starting out you won’t have any trouble finding items to add to your collection. There’s a lot of affordable fishing equipment from the 1800s onward available to add to your collection, so you won’t find it hard to spot items you want to add to your personal collection. You will find basic gear like the rods, reels, and tackle as well as historic items like pictures of anglers and fishing licenses from the mid-1900s.

Typically, most anglers would like to have a vintage reel. Today, reels are made of metal alloys but during the past, different metals like iron, brass, and steel were used. Rod and reel design has also changed over time and you might want to collect examples showing how they evolved over time.

Another popular collectible is fishing lures. Many of the earlier models are much more colorful and attractive than ones used today. Fishing flies open up even more possibilities.

You also need to plan how you will store and display your collection. Some of the larger fishing collectibles can be used to decorate cabins and rec rooms. Small bits of tackle can be added to display cases or frames that keep them dust-free and help preserve them.

In addition to collecting antique fishing gear, you might want to consider collecting gear from around the world. Most of this gear will be homemade using materials easy to find locally. Even today in many parts of the world fishing is not a sport but a means of survival. People fish in order to eat better and the gear they use reflects that need and the local economy.

In collecting these items, just follow what your heart’s desire. There are no rules about what you should collect. What matter is: you have a portion of the past.

Some vintage fishing gear guides available from Amazon include:
