Fishing enthusiasts are always looking for new ways to help bring in the prize. This is true no matter the desired harvest will be. For instance, trout fishing gear is designed to help fishermen (and women) seek the best of the best while out on the lake, stream, or river.

Equipment Needed

One of the most essential pieces of trout fishing gear of course is the rod and reel that is used. You would be amazed at how many varieties there really are.

Additional tools that could improve the quality of your trout fishing experience include the following: hook sharpener, hook remover, multi-fishing tool, pliers, and net. You might also want to bring along some carrying containers, in which to store inside what will hopefully be the abundant supply of fish that you have caught.

Other recommended items you might need after you bring your fish home is a fillet board. This will help you prepare your catch in a way that will be most satisfying and tasteful. It will also act as an extra sanitation measure.

Feature brand names of supplies commonly purchased by people who fish include Frabill, Loki, Shakespeare, and Universal. Another popular item that might come in handy includes what is called the Golden Rule board.

If you are not sure where to find any of these supplies or how they could improve your chances of catching a harvest, descriptions and explanations are offered. This information might be presented in an instructional video, or might be provided by some other source.

The goal in the end is to see how much fish you can have and how much fun you will have. This trip is meant to be special, so hopefully you can make the most of it and you can do what it takes to not get disappointed.

Either way, remember it is the process you are also enjoying, and not the outcome. On the other hand, you have made quite a bit of effort to prepare.

Therefore, you have every right to hope for a great return on your time and money spent-even if this trip is supposed to be just for fun. Most of the time when you use the highest quality trout fishing gear it can significantly improve the possibility of gathering a plentiful harvest.

At a cursory glance, you may be led to think that a fishing hook is a rather simple tool. After all you just will see a curved piece of metal with a sharp point on one end and a small hole on the other, where you insert a fishing line. The fact, however, is that there is really a lot more in this simple bit of fishing gear.

Source: Wikipedia

Parts of a Fishing Hook

Point: Nothing is taken for granted. For example, the point of the hook alone matters a lot. It is important for the sides to taper smoothly and be well rounded. There are different styles of points, which have different uses. For example, the rolled-in one requires less pressure in setting the hook. It holds fish very firmly since it sets quite deeply. On the other hand, if you are handling delicate species of fish like crappie (whose mouth is pretty soft), you will be better off with a hollow-pointed hook.

Barb: Without a barb at the tip of the hook a fish can slip off the hook.

Shank: The various sizes of the shanks are usually measured from 32 to 1, representing the smallest to the larger. From there, the measurement goes from 1/0 to 20/0. Just as you would expect, smaller hooks are used for smaller fish and vice versa.

Eye: You should go for the size of eye that won’t give you trouble as you try to tie your fishing line with wet slippery hands. Your handling will also be easier if the eye is ringed.

Bite: The portion of the hook with the point and barb is known as the front length or the bite.

Bend: The curved section is known as the bend, which leads to a shank with a hole that is known as the eye.

Gap or Gape: This is the distance between the point and the shank is known as the gap or gape.

Throat or bite: Is the distance between the farthest point of the bend and the tip.

Why Knowing These Terms Is Important

There are different types of hooks of varying sizes, and these apparently small differences have a significant effect on fishing. Different types of hooks suit different kinds of fishing, and it is important for you to choose just the right hook for your desired catch.

These details should help you to make the best choice, the next time you set out to buy more fishing hooks.

If you want to succeed in your fishing ventures, you must have a very good way of attracting the type of fish you would like to catch. This is why there are very many types of fishing lures that you can use. In fact, many anglers show a lot of creativity as they design their own fishing lures.

Although there are very many types of lures, with even more variations among them, they all have one basic concept – the ability to attract fish. Although the fish are themselves very careful against being caught, many successful methods have been devised over the years. Flies form just one group of well known lures that have been around since time immemorial.

The basic concept behind anything used is that it must resemble something that the type of fish targeted enjoys to eat. Since there are very many species of fish, with different tastes, it is necessary to have a wide variety of lures as well. Let us take a look at some of the ones in common use.

Spoons: These derive their names from their shape, which resembles spoons. Now no fish is really attracted to kitchen spoons. However, when these things are underwater, they look like minnows, which are themselves often employed as live bait.

Plugs: These types of baits may take the shape of such things as minnows or crayfish. They usually have hooks in the middle and at one end, and are often between 1 and 8 inches long. Some models are designed to float over the water, hence being referred to as floaters.

Spinners: These baits are so designed as to spin while underwater. They usually have loops on both ends to attach hook and line respectively. The spinners are made of either colored or shiny materials, which sparkle as they spin.

Jigs: Although the term evokes the thought of dance, the only semblance of a dance is the wiggling of caught fish. Jigs do not look like live baits at all but they are still great at their work. They are basically blobs with eyes and hooks on opposite ends.

The trick to being successful with any fishing lure is knowing how to find the right lure for the type of fish you want to catch.

When we speak of fishing flies, what exactly do we mean? These are basically lures that are made to look like favorite meals for the fish. They may be in the form of insects or even other smaller fish. What is important is for the flies to resemble the natural food enough to attract the fish. This is the basic principle that has been used since time immemorial.

Both fishermen and fly makers employ a lot of creativity in their designs, which is awe inspiring even to the anglers. These artificial devices are very practical yet they are often great works of art in themselves.

This illustration from a book published in the 18th century shows flies that look quite familiar.

Frontpiece from The Art of Angling by Richard Brookes, 1790

Source: Wikipedia- Fly Fishing

Here are some of the flies you might want to use.

Dry fly: This type of lure is meant to float on the surface of the water, appearing to the fish, say, like a dragonfly. Fish often take the opportunity before the thing “flies away.” The goal is to make the lure too attractive for the fish to ignore. The dry fly is most commonly used in fresh water fishing where the surface is calm.

Wet fly: This type of lure is intended to sink slightly below the water’s surface. Such a lure may be in the form of a nymph, which is a young insect whose wings have not yet developed. The real ones usually crawl on underwater rocks, which is a great attraction to such species as trout.

Terrestrial flies: These are designed to look like things that do not normally live on or in water but just close by it like Lady Bugs, Beetles, and Crickets. Every once in a while such creatures accidentally fall in the water, which is what the lures emulate.

Streamers: These lures essentially resemble other types of fish. They can be used in both fresh and salt water fishing.

Of course, there are some flies that are not made to look like animals; some resemble different types of plants that are delicacies to the fish.

There are lots of books about making your own fishing flies. In fact it make a great hobby for when you can’t go fishing. You can let your creativity shine as you come up with your own unique fishing flies. You can even sell your flies at flea markets or on Ebay. Go ahead and give it try!

It is a primal instinct carried over from man’s hunting and gathering days. These are the times of TV dinners and fast food meals, of canned and boxed and foiled and processed food. Yet we still get that compulsion now and then to go out there into the wild, wild world and catch our own food. Out there the fish are waiting. They are plentiful in our rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, beaches, seas, and oceans.

To catch a fish, one must have the right equipment. Hooks, lures and baits, rods and reels, lines, nets, and floats; in fisherman’s lingo all this gear is all called fishing tackle. Even the type of fishing outfit or clothing is included is commonly known as fishing tackle.

Before any fishing goes on and before tackle is procured, a savvy fisherman has to determine three things about what kind of fishing they will be doing. These 3 things are:

Location – ocean, lake, river, or pier

Species – freshwater or saltwater sport fish

Size – most states regulate the size of each species that is legal to catch and keep

Decide on location, species and size and it becomes easy to choose the right fishing tackle to suit one’s need. Location basically means where one intends to go fishing. Size is simple enough and is closely related to species. What size and species of fish do you intend to catch?

There are a lot of different fishing gear on the market. Deciding on where you plan to fish and what you want to catch narrows your choices of gear. A word of advice for the new fisherman who wants to explore all possible ways of catching a fish – an all around all-purpose beginner’s kit would be best.

Are you into fishing and do you also love collecting classic items? Why not combine both hobbies and collect antique fishing gear. You can combine the thrill of the hunt for vintage gear with learning more about how the sport developed in the last couple centuries.

When you are starting out you won’t have any trouble finding items to add to your collection. There’s a lot of affordable fishing equipment from the 1800s onward available to add to your collection, so you won’t find it hard to spot items you want to add to your personal collection. You will find basic gear like the rods, reels, and tackle as well as historic items like pictures of anglers and fishing licenses from the mid-1900s.

Typically, most anglers would like to have a vintage reel. Today, reels are made of metal alloys but during the past, different metals like iron, brass, and steel were used. Rod and reel design has also changed over time and you might want to collect examples showing how they evolved over time.

Another popular collectible is fishing lures. Many of the earlier models are much more colorful and attractive than ones used today. Fishing flies open up even more possibilities.

You also need to plan how you will store and display your collection. Some of the larger fishing collectibles can be used to decorate cabins and rec rooms. Small bits of tackle can be added to display cases or frames that keep them dust-free and help preserve them.

In addition to collecting antique fishing gear, you might want to consider collecting gear from around the world. Most of this gear will be homemade using materials easy to find locally. Even today in many parts of the world fishing is not a sport but a means of survival. People fish in order to eat better and the gear they use reflects that need and the local economy.

In collecting these items, just follow what your heart’s desire. There are no rules about what you should collect. What matter is: you have a portion of the past.

Some vintage fishing gear guides available from Amazon include:

As any angler knows, successful fly fishing relies in large part on the types of fishing flies you use. Of course, most anglers also realize figuring out which flies to use with which species of fish is anything but simple. Selecting just the right fishing flies for the eating habits of the species in a given locality is an art unto itself, but there are some general guidelines that can help you get started.

Trout fishing flies
When you’re fly fishing for trout, you’ll generally do well with common nymphs. Mayfly or stonefly nymphs seem to work best, although hare’s ears and pheasant tail nymphs also perform well. Another thing to keep in mind is that in general trout are more likely to go for flies without hackles, so you may not want to bother adding them to the flies you purchase.

Bass fishing flies
Of all fishing flies, the ones that entice bass most effectively are poppers. When stripped on the water, these bug-like flies move in a pattern bass go crazy for. While not used as often, a worm-type fly can also attract bass, especially in warmer waters. As large, night-feeding fish, bass aren’t above going after the occasional mouse or other small animal, either. That means anytime you’re fishing at night near tall grass is a good time to try out a mouse or frog fly.

Salmon fishing flies
Salmon aren’t known to be picky eaters, so there’s a wide variety of flies you can use to attract them. That said, spey or stoneflies are among the more popular with this fish. One type of fly that tends to work extremely well with salmon is the egg fly. These flies may look simple, but plenty of salmon fishers have great luck with them.

Keep in mind that the effectiveness of fishing flies doesn’t depend on how showy and complex they are, but on well they simulate the appearance of your fish’s favorite dinner. Before you pick up your next pack of flies for fishing, take some time to review the types that are likely to interest your quarry the most.
