One of the things you should never take for granted during your fishing trip is the weather. Weather conditions tend to change surprisingly fast when you are on water. For example, a calm sea can suddenly turn very rough, slapping your face painfully with the water. It is therefore important to have good weather instruments during your fishing trip.

The weather will not just interfere with you in terms of the discomfort you will experience but fish too will be affected. This happens in a number of different ways. For instance, weather changes affect the insects that normally drop on the water, which the fish feed on.

Whether you are fishing along the shore or you are in a boat deep in the lake, you will benefit a great deal from knowing weather patterns and acting accordingly. You will be able to know what makes the fish stop taking the bait. You will also know when it is time to rush for shelter.

Wind

There are different types of equipment that you can make use of. For example, there are hand-held devices that are useful in measuring such things as direction, speed, and maximum gusts of wind. The instruments make use of these measurements to give you average calculations. When you are looking for a suitable piece of equipment to buy, you should preferably get one that stores these measurements.

Air pressure

While air pressure is hardly taken into consideration at home, it is very important on water. Hence the details that you will get from a barometric gauge will be very important when you are fishing. There is a correlation between a drop in air pressure and foul weather. The pressure is also closely connected to temperature changes. You should be able to measure both the present air pressure and recent trends in order to make well informed decisions.

Temperature

Temperature affects a lot of things, including the types of clothes you should wear. It also determines the best way of steering your boat and even the types of fish that you are likely to get.

You should therefore ensure that you have a pocket-full of weather instruments before you embark on your fishing expedition.

The top places to go for a fishing vacation depend to a great extent on your budget, how far you are prepared to travel, and exactly what you are looking for from your fishing experience. The USA offers such a diverse range of fishing trips and fishing experiences that you will find you cannot exhaust them even in a lifetime of trying. Every state has something unique to offer, so the sooner you start travelling and experimenting, the more experiences you will be able to enjoy.

North to Alaska
Everyone knows the reputation of Alaska as a fishing destination, but you don’t have to go that far if you don’t want to. Winter and summer you can find great fishing spots in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New York. Every state has public parks and lakes which offer challenging fishing for the price of a license. If you have already decided that Alaska is definitely the place to go, you can choose between the famed Alaska salmon fishing or the less well known charter based halibut fishing. Alaska has plenty of devoted fans who return year in year out, so there is no disputing its claim to be one of the top places to go for a fishing vacation.

Angling in the British Isles
For those who are able, and prepared, to go further afield, the British Isles offer some of the world’s finest fishing trips. Within a couple of hundred miles of each other you can find the calm, tranquil lakes of Cumbria and the fast flowing rivers of Northern Scotland. Great Britain offers many diverse fishing experiences within a very small distance, making it an ideal choice for the fisherman who wants to take in as many different experiences as possible within the trip of a lifetime. If you are also interested in playing golf or delving into history, you will find this region one of the most rewarding in the whole world to visit.

Casting Your Nets Wider
Many other places throughout the world can offer their own unique fishing experience. In many third world countries, fishing is a lot more than just a pastime, it can be the major source of trade and income for whole communities. Visiting such areas can bring a whole new perspective and understanding to the fishing enthusiast. Places such as Mexico and Central America can be excellent choices for a fishing vacation, as well as being good choices for fishermen on a limited budget.

For those lucky people for whom budget is not a great concern, there are many legendary fishing spots in the world which double up as exotic tourist locations. If you are part of a couple or family where your passion for fishing is not shared, these destinations can be ideal. You can find much to enjoy together away from fishing, as well as plenty of time to fish in some of the most exotic scenery in the world. Mauritius, Hawaii and the Bahamas are among the finest of these top places to go for a fishing vacation.

Half the fun of a fishing vacation is in the planning, and the internet offers plenty of help there. Why not treat yourself and plan a summer fishing trip even if it has to be close to home?

Gifts for an avid fisherman are not easy to choose unless you have some knowledge of fishing yourself. The last mistake you want to make is to choose a gift which is totally worthless to the recipient, because it is either something which he already has, or something which relates to a different type of fishing from the one he is involved in. The one golden rule you need to follow is to find out as much as you can from the gift’s intended recipient, in a discrete way, of course. If you can ask some questions and show an interest, you should be able to glean enough information to make an informed choice. After all, enthusiasts don’t usually need too much coaxing to talk about their hobbies!

Consider Fishing Gear – Especially Upgrades
The most obvious gift is the fishing gear itself, but many experienced fishermen will have everything they need in terms of the major items – rods, reels, line. If your avid fisherman is relatively new to the sport, he may not yet have upgraded to the better standard of equipment that he will presumably aspire to. If this is the case, buying this equipment will certainly give your fisherman a gift he will appreciate and remember for a long time to come.

Everyone Loves Useful Fishing Gadgets
There may also be a useful gadget which is missing from his collection that he has not yet considered, maybe a meter which tells him how far below the surface his line is? This can be invaluable to a fisherman who knows the depth at which his target prey can be found. Something really silly like a computer mouse shaped like a fish is sure to get a few chuckles.

The Right Clothes Make the Fisherman
Not quite, but clothing is also a popular choice, although again the most avid of fishermen may well have everything they need anyway. A new pair of boots or some waterproof clothing is never a bad idea, especially if you hear your fisherman moaning about the state of his old ones, and saying he really must get round to replacing them!

Give Me Shelter
If clothing is not really an option what about something like a shelter? Fishing shelters like a small tent are relatively inexpensive, yet they can make fishing on a wet day a whole new experience.

Fishing Info: The Best Gift of All
One of the most useful gifts for an avid fisherman can be information. Here, you can probably have access to your fisherman’s collection, so you will know in advance what he has got and what he hasn’t. In the modern world there are plenty of instructional DVD sets made for just about every hobby, and fishing certainly has plenty of them. Provided you can make sure that he doesn’t already have an item in his collection, you are guaranteed here to be buying something useful, durable and relevant.

It is also important not to overlook the media of the past. A lot of fishing techniques have not changed much in decades, and an old book from a previous age can make a wonderful gift. The information can still be highly useful and relevant, and many old books are a treat in themselves, as they were produced with far more care and attention to detail than many modern books. Something which is unique, possibly a signed copy of a classic book, can be one of the most appreciated gifts for an avid fisherman.

While fishing gear is welcome any time of year, with both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day coming up soon, why not give you favorite fisher a gift for their favorite hobby?

No matter where you fish in the United States or many other countries, you will need to have a fishing license. Although there are some federal permit requirement for fishing coast waters for certain kinds of fish, there is no nationwide license. Sports fishing licenses in the US are issued by individual states. This make a lot sense given that each state has distinctly different ecological environments.

The license is one of the reasons why we still enjoy an abundance of fish in our waters. Despite the rising number of recreational and commercial fishermen, the fish population is still being preserved, maintained, and sustained. This is because of the state laws deter overfishing. These laws are part of a complex system to manage our natural resources, monitor fishing activities, reduce the ecological impact of fishing as much as possible, and keep the fish and the waters alive for the next generation. That is why fishing licenses are important and fishing laws must be followed.

The thing to consider when getting a license is that different areas have different regulations. Fees vary according to the types of fishing you apply for too. Sport fishing will have quite different fees and requirements from commercial fishing. Saltwater and freshwater fishing may be also be different. Some areas will offer free fishing days. The fees collected are used in different ways, according to which place you are fishing on. These are usually channeled back to programs for improving the fishing industry.

You can get licenses and permits online or at a local bait and tackle shop. Even if you get a license offline, it’s a good idea to check online to see if there are new rules and regulations. Going online to get your annual or lifetime license is very easy. You do not have to go to an office and instead complete forms via the web and pay with your credit card. Go to your favorite search engine and enter “state-name fishing license.”

By the way both residents and non-residents are required to have licenses before they start fishing. In some states you can get a temporary or short term license if you are vacationing. Often children under 16 are not required to have a license, but they are required to follow the state fishing regulations. Some states offer a discounted license to seniors.

You are responsible for knowing and following state fishing regulations. Check open season dates, minimum legal size limits, daily creel size limits, bait restrictions, schedules and boundaries. All these are important. In this way we can help each other and our environment while enjoying our favorite pastime or sport for years to come.

The history of sport fishing can be traced back to the late fifteen century, to a work written by Dame Juliana Berners, a prioress of St. Albans in England. This work was ahead of its time, as it goes into great detail on many of the issues which still trouble anglers today. The same equipment, albeit manufactured with completely different materials, is in use today as it was then, and there is plenty to be read on rods, line, bait, hooks, and of course the waters in which fishing took place. The book proved very popular, and was reprinted many times during the following century.

This book was followed by a rise in the sport’s popularity in the next two centuries. During the seventeenth century another landmark book was published, this time “The Compleat Angler” by Izaak Walton. This book is one of the most reprinted in the history of English, and was the book which first took up the cause of angling as a sport, as opposed to commercial or subsistence fishing. The book is full of old style poems and songs and is a celebration of the whole of country life, not just of sport fishing.

The history of sport fishing took another leap forward with the invention of the motor boat. This allowed the development of big game fishing around the start of the twentieth century. Now, the sport is well developed and increasingly popular, although it does face new challenges. The dwindling stocks of fish in so many of our waterways have led to new practices being developed where fish are no longer killed as part of the catch, but are measured and released back into the water. In some cases, electronic tags are used to identify catches, and even to send data back to government agencies.

The history of sport fishing involves both individual and team competitions. Individual competitions are mainly found when fishermen congregate on the water’s edge, and the prizes are normally awarded based not only on the number of fish caught, but also on the weight of those fish, and in some cases even the species of fish which have been caught. Competitions involving teams are usually carried out with the teams in boats, and with each team assigned an area of the water in which to operate. The judging criteria are usually the same, with numbers, weight, and species being considered towards an overall points total.

Sport fishing will doubtless face many challenges in the years ahead, with the ever growing awareness of the need to protect the environment and the species which inhabit it. The sport has made an excellent start in dealing with any criticisms which may have been leveled against it, by adopting the methods of releasing fish back into the water once caught, and sport fishing is now actively contributing to conservation by reporting data back to government agencies. The next few decades are going to be a crucially important time in the history of sport fishing.

Everyone is aware of the basic equipment needed for fishing: a rod and reel. But everyone may not be aware that there is different equipment used for different styles of fishing. Spinning reels are different from bait casting reels for a reason.

Hooks and Lures
A pro fisherman wouldn’t use an Aberdeen where a Circle Hook should be used and vice-versa. A fly fisherman will look long and hard for the perfect fly to catch that speckled trout. The same goes with fishing line which is designed with specific applications. At times you may need a lightweight line with a lot of stretch, other times you may need the heavy braided line.

But finding the right gear for the right application goes well beyond these basic elements.

Nets
There are a wide range of fishing nets available. Some are designed for small fresh water fish and others the large burly beasts of the ocean. No matter what species your hoping to catch, it is important to have a net large enough to accommodate your catch.

Tackle Boxes
If you know an avid fisherman, then you realize that a fisherman’s tackle box is like a treasure chest. After years of fishing, all of those flies, lures, hooks and other small fishing tackle will become a sizeable collection. So a good tackle box, with a lot of compartments to keep the small gear safe and secure is a must.

While fishing a fisherman will need other tools as well, like pliers, knives, sharpening tools and a thousand other things. All of these things may seem mundane to the average “Joe”, but to the true fisherman one thing stays the same, through the years and in all environments: the love of that special combination of relaxation and struggle, strategy and stillness that is fishing. It is a good idea to have a bag to carry the items that fit a tackle box.

On the water
While some people find fishing onshore satisfying, most fishermen want to go on on the water. Some prefer kayaks or canoes because they are so easy to carry. Other wouldn’t think of fishing from anything but a boat. Different environments require different boats, such as, dinghies, motor boats, bass fishing boats, or ocean-going 60-footers.

High Tech Gear
Many fishermen consider GPS, sonar, weather radios, and portable generators essential gear. This stuff isn’t cheap but it can make a fishing trip safer and more productive. The sky’s the limit when you are shopping for high tech gear, so be prepared to spend big.

Regardless of the gear you use, one thing holds true: Fishing offers a unique mix of challenge and relaxation. It quiets the soul and gives you time to think about the important things in life. Nevertheless fishing is more fun with the right gear.

So grab your gear and go fishing.
