Low cost fishing kits are great for beginners of any age, because they include all the essential fishing gear needed to get started. However, and adult might feel a bit silly using kit designed for very young children — unless they too are into cartoon heroes. On the other hand a kit designed for teens or adults would be way too hard for little kids to use.

Kits for Young People
Low cost fishing kits can give a young fisherman a chance to try the pastime to see if it suits them without spending a great deal. These kits are sold at a fraction of the price of standard fishing equipment, yet they can introduce a young person in the basics of fishing. If the young person takes to the pastime, they can upgrade to a higher standard of equipment as needed.

Some manufacturers produce fishing kits for grade school children with a theme based on their favorite cartoon characters like the Spongebob Squarepants Floating Spincast Combo Kit. Plus there are kits designed for both little girls and little boys. One of the female designs even donates a portion of the money made to breast cancer research, so you can be supporting an extremely worthy cause as well as introducing your daughter to a hobby which can provide plenty of fresh air, sunshine, and enjoyment.

Some of the kits are aimed at very young children and include mini sized rods that are less than three feet in long. They will also have specially adapted reels which function with button control, making them easier for young people to operate.

Most of the kits fit into the same size pack as these, but have proper five foot rods in two parts. There is always some degree of lost feel and control with a two part rod, but that should be a minor consideration with young beginners.

As the young people progress to a higher standard of equipment, they may well find that a two part rod will suit them anyway. With modern technology, and specifically the use of graphite, the amount of lost feel and control is barely noticeable.

Kits for Any Age Group
The kits aimed at extremely young people are not the only kits available at discount prices. Kits are available which will suit fishermen at any level of experience.

Lures are available in kit form which include all kinds of jigs and spinners which are used to attract fish to the line in the first place. These kits can include the hooks and floats, and even a cheap line, and still come in at under ten dollars! There is even a special kit aimed specifically at trout fishermen which contains grubs and attractants in various colors. These low cost fishing kits will give a budding trout fisherman plenty to experiment with.

Slightly more expensive kits aimed at more advanced fishermen include a full spinning reel combination kit at a very cheap price, and a spin cast kit for even half that amount. Daiwa D-Fish DF-200 Spincast Combo Kit is a good example of this type of kit. It really is cheap and easy to get started in fishing with one of these all purpose kits, and a spin cast reel is the perfect choice for a beginner. Although there is a price to be paid in terms of the distance which can be reached, that price is small, and the beginner should seriously think about using this technology.

There is after all, very little risk involved in buying one of these low cost fishing kits.

If you’ve never bought much fishing gear before, get ready to be intimidated by the different types of fishing line that are on the market right now. The more you know about fishing equipment, the better prepared you will be to buy the right stuff for your own fishing needs.

There really isn’t something at simple as plain old fishing line. The days of horse hair, silk, or linen fishing lines are long gone. Since the 1930s fishermen have used artificial materials like nylon, dacron, and the like. Today’s fishing line is yet another example of “better life through chemistry.” So here’s a quick introduction to modern fishing line.

Types of Fishing Line
There are superline, fluorocarbon, monofilament, and trolling type lines. Learn the differences between these types so that you can make an informed judgment when you need to buy line.

Superline: The braided superline type of line is best used in heavy cover situations. When you need to fish around wood cover, then the superline should be your choice.

Fluorocarbon: The fluorocarbon is the most popular used right now. This fishing line is nearly invisible in water. This can be used for trolling and right now most anglers use this type of line since this is positioned in between the no-stretch features of the braid and the stretch of the monofilament. This is a good choice since this effectively provides good sensitivity to hits and near invisibility.

Monofilament: The single stranded monofilament is the type of fishing line for the enthusiast who is just starting out. This type of line is friendly to new enthusiasts since the knots are easy to learn and this casts well. Choose this line if you have limited fishing know-how. Unfortunately, monofilament line has a memory problem and needs to be replaced frequently or it will “remember” the shape it used previously and assume it.

The trolling type on the other hand is the preferred choice of walleye anglers. It’s the lead core line that works here and this is weighted that allows the fisherman to present the bait a specific depth.

When you buy fishing line you have to consider its diameter, abrasion resistance, color, and stiffness.

The diameter establishes the line’s test strength and improves the line’s durability.

Lines are prone to harsh environmental conditions such as trees, rocks, and the weather so they are made to be resistant to abrasion as much as possible so that they won’t tear off or get snagged easily.

Colors of the fishing line can be clear or blue fluorescent, low-visibility, low-visibility clear, high-visibility gold, coffee, and moss green. The colors serve different purposes and usually match the place where fishing is done. For instance, moss green is best suited in areas where there are thick algae or heavy vegetation while the coffee color is for the muddy areas and stained places.

When it comes to stiffness, it is often that the larger the diameter, the stiffer the line.

How to buy fishing line comes in five easy steps

Choose between the saltwater or freshwater line.

Consider the size, shape and weight of the fishing line. Some types are more light and delicate and easier to roll cast; others are not as delicate but are harder to roll cast. The latter are better to be used in windy situations since they can resist the force of the wind because they are heavier. Fishing line is available in different weights: 4 lb, 10 lb, 12 lb, 20 lb, etc. The line weight should be strong enough for whatever fish you hope to catch.

Decide on the color of the line. A fisherman may want to follow the line once it has been thrown on the water. Usually one doesn’t have to worry about the color of the line being distinguished by the fish because it won’t be seen. The neutral-colored leader is the disguise.

Consider line retrieval. There are not a lot of variables in here so it is just attaching the line to the reel.

Grab something that will clean the line after it is used and before storing it. Dirt from the water enveloped the line so it must be removed so that the line would maintain its flexibility and can be used for a very long time.

The best line is strong, light, flexible, immune to the elements, and resistant to kinks and curls. If you thought that fishing line was simple to buy, it is but you have to know what you are looking for or ask a knowledgeable sales person. Fishing line is cheap, so there’s no excuse for buying poor quality line.

Looking for discount fishing gear isn’t a hard task at all. In fact, the internet is loaded with great quality discount fishing equipment that is available at your convenience. So, how can you find good deals on the net? It all comes down to how much time you are willing to spend and where you look for potential bargains. Keep in mind we are talking about quality gear, not junk that starts to fall apart as you walk out the store.

The first thing to do is to look for promo codes and coupons so you will have the chance to get a discount. These deals are generally short term and change frequently. A few coupon sites to check out are: CouponMountain, Deallocker, and RetailMeNot.

Additional places to check for bargains include:

Online comparison shopping sites: Dealtime, PriceGrabber, and Smarter

Dsicounts and reviews: Amazon and Amazon Marketplace

Online general stores: Overstock.com and Buy.com

Sporting goods stores: Cabelas, Rei, Dicks Sporting Goods

Stores that carry only fishing equipment: LandBigFish.com, Bass Pro Shops

Big box stores: Sears, Kmart, Target, Walmart

Don’t forget to check these sites for clearance sales and promotions.

Another great source of information is the equipment manufacturers themselves. You can always get more information about their products on their websites, and you can also find out about special events and promotions. Most of these sites feature instruction manuals, videos, and suggestions for making the best use of you equipment. Some of the sites include searchable lists of online and local dealers. Most web browsers will try to locate the homepage of any manufacturer that you put in the location bar. For example, type Daiwa or Shimano in the location bar or browsers search box and hit Enter.

The internet offers a smorgasbord of choices when it comes to fishing gear. You should be able to pick up high quality gear at a good price using online resources. Be patient and remember to spread you net wide to find discount fishing gear that will provide excellent value.

The best fishing gear upgrades for you depend on the type of fishing you are engaged in, your skill level, and your budget. When you start out as a fisherman, it really does make sense to spend as little as possible while still making sure you get usable equipment. Honestly, there are so many choices available for cheap but perfectly decent equipment that paying any more than necessary is simply wasting money. Take time out to make sure that the equipment you are buying is suitable for your type of fishing, but spend too much too soon.

Fishing line
When you are just starting out, you should keep expenses down, but if there is one area where it is worth spending a bit more money, it is on the fishing line itself. A good quality line can be perfectly usable even with a cheaper rod or reel. By the same token, when you gain more experience and are ready to upgrade, an upgrade to a better quality line would be a great place to start. Not only does a better line lessen the chances of a broken line costing you a prime catch, it also makes the casting of the line more accurate, and it makes you more likely to achieve the requisite distance.

Spinning Reel
As a beginner fisherman, you will benefit greatly from using the relatively new spin cast reel technology. Spin cast reels have only been available for just over fifty years, compared with the century or more that spinning and centerpin reels have been available. Although these older technologies have gone through many evolutions, they are still prone to either backlash or line maintenance problems. A beginner will be better advised to use a spin cast reel, even though this inevitably means some sacrifice in terms of casting distance. If the fisherman takes to the sport, changing to a spinning reel can be one of the best fishing gear upgrades.

Once a new fisherman has been active for around a year or so, he can decide whether to upgrade to a spinning reel. A spinning reel has the disadvantage of potential line problems, but if a sufficient skill level has been developed to overcome this, then the reel will be easier to manage and control of the line will be greater. The extra distance gained should be noticeable. In recent decades, there has been a move away from the spin cast technology, although it still represents the best choice for a beginner.

Specialized Reel
If you have started out as a beginner with a versatile medium weight rod, you can upgrade by buying another rod for more specialized situations. While it should never be necessary to change the original rod, provided it was a wise choice, you will definitely notice the benefit of an additional rod if you are going to try a form of fishing which really needs a light or heavy rod. If versatility is something which appeals to you, moving from one rod to a choice of rods will be one of your best fishing gear upgrades.

When you’re shopping for something as expensive as used fishing boats, it’s only natural to be wary about agreeing to buy before you get a chance to see the item first. While there are risks involved in buying used boats online, your chances of finding exactly the boat you want at a budget-friendly price are a lot higher than if you stick with your local area.

Know what you need
There are dozens of varieties of fiberglass and aluminum fishing boats out there. It’s all to easy to get thrown off track by all the cheap used fishing boats for sale out there and end up buying a boat only to realize later that it wasn’t quite the model you wanted. Before you start your search for the perfect boat, take some time to think through what you really need and want in a boat. For instance, a center-console model may be fine if you don’t plan to spend the night on the boat, but if you want something a little more comfortable for longer stays, it may be worth investing in a cuddy-cabin boat.

Buy from a reputable company
Sure, you can find ads for used fishing boats on obscure little websites run by semi-anonymous sellers, but buying through sites like these will almost guarantee you hassles and headaches. Before you buy from any given Web site, make sure they provide full contact information, clear buying guidelines, and plenty of information about each boat available. If you plan on buying from an auction site, classifieds site, or other site where individuals put their used fishing boats up for sale, make sure you do your due diligence on the seller.

Watch for discounts
One of the easiest ways to find discounts on new or used fishing boats is to wait until after fishing season to do your shopping. That may mean another season in your old boat, but it could also mean a few hundred dollars in savings. Another plus is when the prices are low, you’ll be able to get more boat for your budget. Larger companies also occasionally run sales, so if you find a site that appeals to you, check back frequently.

By looking for used fishing boats for sale online, you’ll be able to browse a wide selection of boats and get access to discounts and sales that may not be available in your home town. Give some thought to exactly what kind of boat you need, stick to sites run by reputable companies, and you could have the prefect boat home and ready to go by spring.

When you shop online knowing what you are looking for and focusing on just that will make your online shopping less stressful and more productive. Stay focused and you won’t be distracted by flashy graphics, catchy videos, or fishing gadgets your don’t need.

Every bit of fishing gear, from the smallest lure to the most complex electronics, is meant to serve a specific purpose. Whether or not a piece of gear is right for you depends on where you fish and what type of fish you want to catch.

Buying online has a number of advantages over shopping at the local bait shop or even trying to find particular items at a high-end sporting goods outlet.

The local shops have the know-how and expertise of how things work and the best place to use whatever it is you have in mind, but the selection can be limited. The prices may be higher as well due to overhead or limited availability from distributors to the smaller retailers.

With the larger stores you may end up dealing with an employee with a limited knowledge of what is being sold making it harder to find the smaller items you need. The prices at the big name outlets can be appealing, but since most of them are located in commercial areas, finding the time or having to plan a trip to get there may not be worth it.

Buying equipment on-line can be a great deal better in many different ways, because you can:

Shop 24/7 365: You can do it all from the comfort of your own home, at any time of day or night.

Compare prices: You can take your time and look at various places and easily check the prices of the items you want to buy.

Read expert opinions: Specialized online discussion groups (forums or bulletin boards) are a rich resource to information about fishing equipment.

Ask questions: If you are stumped about how to use a piece of fishing gear, sites like Ask.com and Yahoo Answers will provide answers in less than 24 hours.

The information from these sites comes from fishermen have a really good working knowledge of an item or at least have seen it in action.

You can buy fishing equipment from a variety of online source, including:

Mom and Pop stores

Specialty retailers

Discount stores

Large franchised chain stores

Online giants like Amazon

Auction sites like Ebay

Classified sites like Craigslist

Of course, you must be careful when you shop online. Stick to stores and brands that you know have a good reputation. If buying online makes you nervous, you can always shop online but go to a nearby store to buy the item.
